Sustainable Tourism – March 2023

Wednesday 29th March 9-10pm

Read on as things are not all that they seem and we found out that “Sustainable Tourism” is more than just being Green!

We often hear about the phrase sustainable tourism and how important it is for us all, so given that ScotlandHour is all about promoting tourism in Scotland, we thought it appropriate to have a closer look at it.

What exactly is it? Well, in terms of the definition of sustainable tourism, the UNWTO define it as:

“Tourism that takes full account of its current and future economic, social and environmental impacts, addressing the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment and host communities”

So interestingly, there is more to sustainable tourism than just the environmental aspect and this wider remit can sometimes be overlooked.

Certainly there has been some great improvements made by businesses in recent years, as well as those who have always been operating in a sustainable manner, so this is all good positive news. Most organisations have embraced “Reduce / Reuse / Recycle” either for cost or environmental reasons and we’d love to hear from you on the things that you’ve seen around Scotland.

There are a number of great initiatives about including the Visit Scotland Green Certification, Green Tourism and The Travel Foundation so we’ve put the links below for you.

When considered in a wider context beyond just the environment then there is plenty of scope for organisations to take actions and hopefully this conversation will allow us all to learn a bit more and be more sustainable.

Our guest hosts this month are @FamouslyHawick and Deb Macken from @LochLomondHol so our thanks for their support and ideas on this.

The questions are:

9.00pm Q1 Can you share with us examples of sustainable tourism that you’ve found?

9.10pm Q2 What examples can you recommend where businesses are significantly reducing their impact on the environment?

9.20pm Q3 Share with us good examples of places and businesses embracing renewable energy?

9.30pm Q4 What are your recommendations getting about without using the car? And what destinations / venues can you recommend with electric vehicle charging points?

9.40pm Q5 Tell us your favourite places to shop locally for food, drink or anything at all?

9.50pm Q6 Share with us your photos of what sustainable tourism looks like to you?

Don’t forget to include #Scotlandhour in your tweets & if answering Q1, include A1 etc

And we look forward to seeing you on Wednesday 29th, 9-10pm
